The construction of the second pilot vessel ‘Somtrans LNG’ has been recently completed. Somtrans LNG was inaugurated on April 26th and received a delegation from the European Commission’s Innovation and Networks Executive Agency (INEA). The construction of the Somtrans LNG has been made possible with co-financing from the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility.
The Somtrans LNG (135 x 22,80m, 14.000m3) is amongst the largest European inland vessels taken into operation. It is the second pilot vessel in the Action ‘Breakthrough LNG deployment in Inland Waterway Transport’. The first pilot vessel in the Action, ‘The Werkendam’, was commissioned in 2018.
The first Somtrans barge was taken into operation in 1975, the year the company was founded in a small office in Antwerp. The last decade Somtrans has registered a significant growth and developed into an experienced tanker shipping company with fully-owned barges. Further details about Somtrans can be found on their website.
